January can be all kinds of things, freezing cold, wet, frosty, snowy, windy, mild, sunny. But one thing you can be sure of – there won’t be much you can do for your garden during this month. It is of course a great time to be making repairs to your outbuildings, cleaning out your green houses and tying things back to neaten up the appearance of your garden, but hey you did that in the run up to Christmas, right? If you are on top of your jobs now is a good time for reflection. Take time to make your plans for Spring, what are you going to plant, and where? What grew well last year and which plants didn’t really take? There is an abundance of information on the internet, and while we are not here to plug any particular site, it’s always advisable to seek information from well regarded websites such as *ahem* the Royal Horticultural Society or well known gardeners. The Kew gardens website has loads of ideas as well. If you’re stuck for inspiration, a trip to your local garden centre or nursery should do the trick!
Tidying up your garden is a bit like giving your home a spring clean, as my grandmother used to say, you always start at the top of your house and work your way down. And the same goes for your garden. There is no point in planting delicate plants and flowers only to follow this by trimming the hedge above. Starting at the top of your garden means cutting back the hedges and pruning trees wherever needed. And when you have cleared away the debris you can begin planting, so bare this in mind when you start your Spring planting!
If you’re happy to brave the cold and get stuck into some serious gardening or you just want to neaten it up you might consider investing in some seriously good hedge trimmers, and here at Just Lawnmowers we have several brands at different prices to suit all budgets. Of course we can’t mention hedge trimmers without mentioning one of our favourite brands.
So here is what we think of our top brand, Honda and two of their top petrol hedge trimmers.
Honda hedge trimmers are specifically designed to offer low-vibrations and you’ll be happy to know they offer the lowest noise and emissions of all other hedge trimmers of this type. Honda have ensured that their petrol hedge trimmers can tackle even the most ragged of hedges and quickly and expertly bring it back into shape. From the moment you pick up a Honda hedge trimmer you will soon notice it is lighter and easier to handle than any other brand. They really are so quiet and safe to use. Not only will they ensure your hedge stays in shape, thanks to their auto-sharpening blades, the teeth stay in great shape. They also feature an anti- snapping blade protector as standard which means the life of the machine is maximised.
These Honda machines also feature a mechanical decompression system – if you have no idea what this means, take heart – not many people do, however the good news is, it makes for very easy starting, much less effort than most other hedge trimmers! We’ll just give you a little bit more jargon, the mechanical decompression system is combined with a super-light flywheel which means to you and me, that the starter rope pull weight is just 7.2kg, and Honda assures us this is extremely lightweight, making for a very easy start up. Gone are the days of putting your back out just starting your machine, before you’ve even begun working.
Another thing that Honda do extremely well is making their machines easy to use. Now, nobody is saying we are a bunch of amateurs of course, but gardening is hard work, whatever you are doing and however much experience you have. So when a brand such as Honda take it upon themselves to make our job as easy as possible we believe they should be celebrated. The handles on these hedge trimmers have been carefully positioned to give the user the ultimate comfort whilst working. The idea behind this, Honda suggest, is that if you are comfortable when you work, you can work for longer. This sounds simple enough but this is actually hard to achieve and only a brand with as much knowledge and expertise such as Honda can effectively pull this off and not charge us over the top prices for the pleasure. There’s an old saying that goes “the proof is in the pudding” well in this case the proof is in two of our favourite petrol hedge trimmers which both happen to be Hondas. Read on for our expert opinions.
Before we give you the low-down on our two favourite petrol hedge trimmers from Honda, we feel it only justified to give you a bit more information on their low vibration system. If you’ve ever met anyone who suffers from Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (Or HAVS) you may know that this is an extremely debilitating condition that basically develops from using high vibration hand-tools, such as hedge trimmers. So, with this in mind, Honda has developed their unique anti-vibration clutch which incorporates a vibration damping system. This has actually been proven to be successful during long term practical tests. Great news for those busy gardeners!
Honda HHH 25D 75E 28″ Hedge Trimmer (double bladed)
Honda is famous for delivering cutting edge technology and this Honda HHH 25D 75E 28″ Hedge Trimmer is no exception, featuring the World’s first 4-stroke engine which means that this powerful machine offers you exceptional power and cutting capabilities combined with a lightweight and quiet machine that is easier to use than ever before. This HHH 25D 75E features dual auto-sharpening blades and an anti-snapping blade protector, which guarantees they will last longer, however hard they have to work! Easy to handle and control this Honda hedge trimmer features 180 degree handle adjustment, giving the you ultimate flexibility as you work. And of course we can’t promote our petrol products without a quick reminder that with petrol you are working without any of those trailing wires or leads, no need for a power source and thanks to the cleaner 4 stroke engine you won’t be mixing oil and petrol so that makes for an easier operation. If you’re wondering why 4 stroke is better than 2 stroke, without getting too technical we think the most important features of the 4 stroke is that it is significantly cleaner, quieter and more environmentally friendly (complying with the stringent EN2006 emissions standard). These 4 stroke engines are quieter and you will soon notice this as well as the lower vibrations as you work.
Honda HHH 25S 75E 28″ Hedge Trimmer (single bladed)
There’s not a huge amount of difference between this model and the Honda HHH 25S 75E 28” Hedge Trimmer. It features the same lightweight, powerful, cleaner, greener 4 stroke engine and offers excellent ergonomics as standard. The blades however are different. They are single for a start, and if you know what you are looking for then that is all we need to tell you. However if you’re not sure what the difference is, or whether you need a single or a double bladed hedge trimmer then we are the people to help you out! The double bladed hedge trimmer is excellent for when you have different types of things to cut, because they are flexible and have increased manoeuvrability. This makes them easier to use when you are shaping something or need to change direction of the cut. The single bladed hedge trimmer is better suited to getting those ragged hedges in order, where you have one long hedge that needs trimming or bringing back into shape. The single bladed hedge trimmer often incorporates a clipping collector guard which means that it dislodges cuttings and debris as you work. This makes for excellent results and your neighbours may well look on in envy at your perfect hedge.
If you’re still not sure which Honda model to choose – have a good look round your garden, if you have just one long hedge then the Honda HHH 25S 75E 28″ Hedge Trimmer (single bladed) is probably better suited to you, however if you need your hedge trimmer for multiple uses and you like to shape or prune then the Honda HHH 25D 75E 28″ Hedge Trimmer (double bladed) is probably best for this.
