Keeping your garden lawn in good condition isn’t just about watering and mowing. Giving your lawn regular maintenance will keep it in tip top condition all year round.
While the majority of us enjoy a garden that is mostly given over to lawn, not everyone realises that there are loads of products out there to keep your lawn in fantastic condition. If you are looking to only give your lawn the minimum of care, then cutting at least once a week during the growing season, and keeping it watered during any dry spells will still give you good results. However, there are three things that you can do at this time of year, to get even better results, and here at Just Lawnmowers, we think they are pretty easy, so whether you are a well weathered gardener or new to the world of gardening, read on for three very simple things you can do to improve the condition and look of your lawn.
- Scarify your lawn – if you are a professional we recommend a robust product such as the Dori SC38 BS Scarifier. The Dori SC38 BS Scarifier comes with free lawn sand (worth £40) which is a great offer and the timing couldn’t be more perfect, being the start of Spring with Summer gently approaching. This Dori scarifier features a Briggs & Stratton 3.5hp 4 stroke engine, which will give reliable power for many years to come. A 38cm working width together with a 40 litre collector will allow you to work efficiently, while the micro height adjustment will ensure you achieve perfect results whatever mother nature throws your way. Scarifying is essential to eradicate thatch and moss which harms the growth and health of your lawn. Use a scarifier as you would a lawn mower, you will be surprised at how much debris it collects from your lawn.
- Spiking – use a garden fork to put holes into your lawn, this improves the drainage and also aerates the grass roots. Here at Just Lawnmowers we suggest you need go down to about 4″ (10cm) every 6″ (15cm) or so. This can be quite a long job if you have a big area, so it might be a good idea to get some help!
- Top dressing – Take a 50/50 mix of sharp sand and compost and spread it out over the lawn. When you have covered the lawn you can “sweep” the mixture into the holes (we use a Besom broom for this, if you haven’t got one already they look a bit like a witches broom, and rarely cost above £10). Take care not to step on the lawn at this point, we always use a long plank of wood to stand on to ensure the weight is evenly balanced. This stops any holes being trodden on and squashed closed.
You might think at this stage that your lawn doesn’t look very good at all. But give it a week or so and soon new healthy grass will start to grow through. Why not invest in a lawn mower with a rear roller, and then you can achieve not only a perfect lawn, but also those must-have stripes! If possible in this early growing stage encouraging children and pets to play elsewhere will enable the process even more.
