With Autumn approaching and the end of August in tow, now is the time to be thinking about scarifying your lawn.
Now, I know what you’re probably thinking right now…Nothing can be done in the garden with the turf as wet and damp as it is! But in actual fact, now is the perfect time for scarification lawn prep!
Mother nature has already been watering your lawn over the last few days, so that’s one less step you need to do yourself; but make sure the soil isn’t too wet when you begin scarification. It’s a good idea to lay some moss killer over your lawn roughly 7-10 days before you want to scarify to ensure that all the moss dries out and dies. This is a very advisable step because moss doesn’t have roots, therefore if you scarify before killing it then it is likely to spread over the grass encouraging more to grow. It’s also advisable to have short grass when you wish to scarify, so begin to gradually bring the height of it down gradually over a week or two before hand.
After you’ve scarified, over-seed your lawn. By digging or scratching into the lawn when removing thatch you are not only allowing oxygen and water to reach the grass roots, but the weed roots too. Sowing additional grass seed after scarification will limit weed growth and help create a thicker, greener lawn which is the perfect defence against weeds and moss too.
