Gardening Jobs For January

No matter what month it is, there’s always work to be done in the garden. So we’ve compiled a list of gardening tasks that we believe are vital to perform in the cold winter month of January.

There is a selection of jobs to do for all sections of your garden.

Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Gardens:

  • Bryony_Berries_-_geograph.org.uk_-_69837If you planted parsnips and leaks, then these will need harvesting.
  • Begin sprouting early potatoes by standing them on end in a tray or egg box. They must be placed in a bright frost-free place.
  • Potatoes in containers can start growing if they are undercover.
  • Put a cloche over some soil to let it warm up a few weeks prior to growing early peas.
  • Remove any yellowing leaves from a winter brassicas as they could carry pests and diseases.
  • Prune apple and pear trees if you have them, as it is best done when they are dormant.
  • Prune blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants.
  • Order fruit bushes now and plant in a well prepared bed in a sheltered area.
  • Prune Wisteria and rose bushes.
  • Try growing winter-flowering evergreen Clematis or Alstroemeria.
  • Cut back all old foliage from ornamental grasses.
  • Cut down old stems of perennial plants like sedum.
  • Remove any faded flowers from winter pansies so that they don’t set seed.

Greenhouse:

  • Make sure you have brushed off any heavy snow from cold frames to prevent glass damage.
  • Keep potato planters inside the greenhouse.
  • Plant Amaryllis bulbs in pots for indoor flowers in the early spring.

Your Lawn and Garden:

  • Avoid walking on your lawn as much as possible, as when it is covered by a heavy frost or snow, the grass beneath becomes very damaged.

  • Recycle Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch.
  • Repair and re-shape lawn edges.
  • Get rid of slimy patches on the patio and paving by scrubbing with a broom or using a pressure washer.
  • Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds.
  • Keep planting trees and shrubs while they are still dormant.

Other:

  • Plan your vegetable plot for this year to ensure good crop rotation and prevent pests and diseases.
  • Order your fruit trees now ready for planting in the spring.
  • Order your seeds now and have a garden plan drawn up.
