Brushcutter and Grass Trimmer Questions and Answers

Brushcutter and Grass Trimmer Questions and Answers Brushcutter and Grass Trimmer Questions and Answers

What is the difference between grass trimmers and brushcutters?

A grass trimmer is a smaller, lighter machine, made for trimming the lawn where the mower is unable to reach. Brushcutters are more powerful machines; they can clear high grass, heavy brushwood and small trees.

I want to trim the lawn and clear brushwood at the edge of the forest. Do I need two machines?

You can use the same machine for both jobs if you choose the right model. Ensure you choose a model that can accept a nylon trimmer head and metal blade. Wheeled Trimmers are perfect for those hard to reach areas or places with thick or even wet grass and small scrubs. They are able to clear rough ground on all terrain conditions, safely and with less effort.

What else can I use my brushcutter for?

Some brushcutters have compatible hedge-cutting, pole saw, cultivator and edger attachments. If they are available, we have them listed as optional extras on our websites.

I live in a quiet residential area where noise can upset the neighbours? Do you have any quiet-running machines?

Firstly, you could consider an electric-powered machine such as the excellent Ryobi RLT-1000EX grass strimmer. If you’d still prefer a petrol-powered machine, your best option would be to opt for a four-stroke brushcutter over a two-stroke as they generally run a lot quieter.

Is it difficult to use a brushcutter?

Not with the right techniques. Also, many machines are supplied with ergonomic harnesses that help take the weight off your arms, shoulders and back. The fundamentals of operating techniques, safety and maintenance must be considered when using the machine – refer to your operator’s manual.

Do I need to wear protective equipment?

When using a brushcutter or trimmer you should always use protective eyewear and a visor, protective trousers and boots. Don’t forget about gloves and hearing protection too!

What type of fuel should I use in a trimmer/brushcutter?

Most petrol grass strimmers and brushcutters use 2-stroke engines. Two-stroke engines should always be run on a mixture of petrol and good-quality two-stroke oil. Always check your operator’s manual for petrol/oil mix details and consider a mixing bottle for accurate measurements and ease of use.

However the excellent range of Honda brushcutters are all 4-stroke machines meaning they only require unleaded petrol to run.

Which grass trimmers/ brushcutters do you recommend?

We only sell grass trimmers and brushcutters that we know are well-made and reliable. We don’t sell cheap brand imports that are cheap and untested. For this reason all our petrol and electric brushcutters and grass strimmers that we sell on our websites are recommended!

  1. “When using a brushcutter or trimmer you should always use protective eyewear and a visor, protective trousers and boots. Don’t forget about gloves and hearing protection too!”
Yeah, and don’t forget THROAT protection! I have been hit several times and am in the habit of working with my chin tucked in. Oh, yeas, there is no throat protection. The only thing I know of is a snap on addition to an overpriced Oregon helmet which the reviews have convinced me not to buy.

  2. I have a cordless Macallister Mgt18 strimmer. It has stopped working. I was looking at replacing it with a Stihl cordless brushcutter.
Do strimmers and brush cutters do the same job?
