Troubleshooting lawn mower stale fuel issues

Stale fuel is one of the most common causes of engines / lawn mowers to stop running or to run raggedly (hunting). This sort of issue can happen in all price brackets and is not something that is covered under the warranty for all manufacturers. We mostly sees this sort of issue after the New Year where the lawnmower has been left in storage with fuel in the tank and will then refuse to start due to the carb being ‘gummed up’. Luckily there is a possible way to fix this. Drain the machine from the carb (float) bowl which is located behind the air filter – Do this by loosening the nut slightly and this will drain the fuel from the machine. Blow down the fuel tank and it will hopefully clear any sediment in the carb – if you are also able to obtain any carb cleaner spray this into the carb. You could also take the carb/float bowl off and clean out any crystallized petrol in the bottom using an old rag or something similar. If you are also able to obtain any carb cleaner spray this into the carb. Tighten the nut and then refuel the machine with fresh fuel Hopefully when you restart the machine this will have sorted the problem for you. Unfortunately if this has not rectified the issue, it will need to be taken to a local dealer for inspection/repair, please bear in mind that if it is a fuel related issue it may not covered under the warranty. To maintain the fuel, we would suggest purchasing a fuel stabiliser as this will keep the fuel fresher for a longer duration of time. The directions of use will be on the bottle but normally you can use a 10ml of stabiliser for 10L of fuel for occasional use or 10ml for 3L for long term storage.

These items will be dispatched as soon as we possibly can and will usually arrive within 1-2 working days and in many cases on the next working day (stock permitting if ordered before 2 pm, Mon-Fri). Our Start 'N' Go and Start 'N' Go+ service is offered with many large products and many need to be assembled and tested before dispatch. Because of this, delivery is 3-5 working days but can be sooner depending on the time of the year (if ordered Mon-Fri, stock permitting).

Honda Izy Troubleshooting Guide

Introduction

Honda Izy lawn mowers are really good quality machines. They will give many years of reliable service, but sometimes people don’t read the User Manual and so have problems.

This guide is designed to help you to get your new Honda Izy lawnmower up and running quickly. It addresses the common problems people have when they take delivery of a new Honda Izy lawnmower.

It is not a substitute for the User Manual, more of a pictorial supplement to it.

Step 1: The Correct Fuel and Oil

Fill up the petrol tank with normal unleaded petrol. Note: All Honda lawnmowers have 4-stroke engines which means they run on normal unleaded petrol. There is no need to mix oil with the petrol. But unleaded fuel has a disadvantage too. Because there is no lead in it, it’s chemical structure breaks down very quickly. If you have had the fuel for more than a month it is very likely to cause starting and running problems, so if in doubt, buy some fresh unleaded petrol.
Your new Honda Izy will have been delivered with a bottle of Honda Oil. Make sure you put the whole bottle into the oil chamber (see instruction manual for details).

Step 2: HT Lead and Spark Plug

Your new mower will arrive with the HT lead disconnected from the spark plug.
Take hold of the HT lead firmly…
Push it onto the spark plug firmly…
Until it ‘clicks’ into place.

Step 3: Turn the Fuel Tap On

When your mower arrives the fuel tap will be turned off…
Turn it on by rotating it clockwise until it lines up with the fuel pipe…
Your new Honda Izy should now be ready to start.

Step 4: Starting for the First Time

Pull the ‘deadman’s handle’ (has a red STOP symbol on it) up to the handlebar and then pull the starting cord (or turn the key). You may need 2 or 3 pulls. The mower will start and you can get on with mowing the lawn.
Note: If you have a self-propelled Honda Izy, dont pull the orange ‘drive’ lever towards the handlebar whie trying to start it because it will be much harder to start your mower.

Troubleshooting

In the unlikely event that your mower still doesn’t start, tip it over to one side for 10 seconds with the air filter pointing skyward – see picture below. (The air filter has ‘Auto Choke System‘ written on it).

Whilst tipped up, gently pull the starting cord twice (don’t use enough force to start the engine).

This method works because sometimes when first filled with petrol, air can get trapped in the fuel line and doing this will clear it by gravity feeding fuel into the carburettor.

Having done this, lower the mower back to the ground and start normally (see Step 4 above).

Warning: Do not tip the mower over with the air filter towards the ground (see picture below) as this will cause oil to leak into the air filter, which can cause running problems, poor starting, excessive exhaust emissions and smoke.

Depsite our careful instructions, occasionally delivery drivers tip mowers up the wrong way during transit. This allows the small amount of engine oil left in at the factory to seep into the air filter and contaminate it. This causes running problems, poor starting, excessive exhaust emissions and smoke. We do everything we can to stop this happening, but cannot guarantee it will never happen. If you think it may have happened to your new mower, remove the air filter from its cover and inspect it for oil contamination. (See user manual for instructions). If it is contaminated, please let us know straight away so we can deal with the problem for you.

The tips above will solve 99% of problems with Honda Izy lawn mowers.

Warranty claims

Warranty issues will usually be dealt with by your nearest local dealership. For example for Honda warranties, your local Honda dealer is obligated to look at the machine for you. As the selling dealer we will also handle warranties and repairs on the machine for you, but at first, we would initially attempt to troubleshoot the issue over the phone or through our support system. Please bear in mind if it is a genuine issue with the machine, it will be covered under the warranty, if for any reason it is found to be a non-warrantable issue there may be costs involved. If there is no local dealership in your area you may have to return the machine to us for repair. Our highly qualified workshop team are standing by to fix any machine that has to be returned to ourselves. If you have an issue with your machine that we are unable to troubleshoot via our contact systems then our next step would be to arrange to have the machine uplifted for inspection/repair. Road engineers - We have a number of engineers which are able to do onsite visits for warrantable work for mostly ride on lawn mowers and, in some cases, larger lawn mowers. Here is our simple guide to giving your lawn mower a pre-season health-check and ensuring it starts well and runs well every time… Quick Checklist Read the Manual Oil Air filter Fuel Cutter blade Blade sharpening 1. Read the Manual Read the operator's manual for your mower Many mower problems can be completely avoided by reading the operator’s manual. These include using the wrong fuel, wrong oil, overlooking safety procedures, tipping the mower up incorrectly and flooding the air filter or exhaust with oil. Don’t be tempted to guess or ‘wing it’… you can buy a lawnmower operator’s manual for just a few pounds and it can save you hours of time and costly repair bills. 2. Oil Always check the oil every time you use your mower. To check the oil, stand the mower on a level surface and take out the oil dipstick, (refer to your owner’s manual to locate it). Clean off the dipstick with a dry cloth and re-insert it. Now take it out again and check the oil level indicated on it. It should be perfectly level with the mark on the dipstick. Top up if necessary using the correct oil (many mowers use very specific oil so don’t be tempted to top it up with any old oil you have lying around).  Always check the oil at least 3 times. 3. Air filter When did you last inspect the air filter on your mower? The air filter is a vital part which ensures that no abrasive particles can enter the engine.  If it gets clogged up or blocked, it starves the carburettor of oxygen and causes poor starting, poor fuel economy and potential engine damage.  The air filter is located on top of the mower or beside the carburettor. It contains either a paper or foam filter depending on the make and model. Foam air filters can be cleaned (see manual for details), whilst paper air filters must be replaced when contaminated with dust and grass. 4. Fuel One of the most common causes of a lawn mower that won’t start is stale fuel. Petrol is an organic hydrocarbon and like all organic substances it breaks down naturally over time. If the fuel in your mower is more than 10 to 12 weeks old you should drain it and replace with new, fresh fuel. This will dramatically improve your mower’s starting and performance.
