Autumn is definitely here now that the leaves are rapidly falling and large gusts of wind are slapping against our faces after 2 minutes outside.
Just because autumn has hit so suddenly, it doesn’t mean that you should hibernate and give up completely on your gardening. There are many duties which can be performed in September and October in order to prepare your garden for the winter months ahead and keep it in excellent condition.
In early Autumn it’s very important to begin by clearing up beds and removing any dead leaves and foliage and start making way for the groundwork which will keep your plants in great condition even when the weather is miserable and mundane. It’s often a good idea to turn any of the dead leaves and foliage into compost if possible.
It is a great idea to clean and weed your garden paths before spraying them with an organic weed killer to keep away any unwanted growth. By cleaning and weeding all paths now, you are saving yourself a huge job next spring when you finally get back into the gardening which you’ve left over the icy winter months.
The months of September and October are ideal for if you’re wanting to expand any of your garden, or to have a total overhaul with new plants. In fact, autumn is the best time of year to do so as plants can make an incredibly strong start and ‘bed in’ before the cold weather hits and begins to make life difficult for them. Autumn is even the best time of year for if you are wanting to relay your lawn, as the seed should be given a chance to take root and grow before the cold weather takes over.
By clearing moss and weeds from all areas of grass and providing the soil with one last feed before winter will help the grass to stay alive for longer and survive the winter colds.
If you lay mulch or wood chippings in between plants and shrubs before winters arrival takes place, then it will help protect the soil and keep in vital nutrients which are needed for the soil to remain fertile and to keep your lawn looking its best all year round.
If you have the idea of making new plants from the ones which are already situated in your garden, then the best time of year to take cuttings from the plants is autumn. They need to be about 10 cm tall and you should remove any lower leaves before you plant them in small pots filled with good quality soil.
These are just a few of our top tips for garden preparation over the autumn. Stay tuned for more information on ways to protect your garden from the effects of winter.
