Pruning Preparation for Autumn and Winter

As the Autumn leaves fall and you take a look around your garden, you’ll begin to notice how your plants, trees and bushes are looking particularly dormant. In fact, you may have even noticed a dead branch or two on your favorite tree. Some of these dead branches could have been there for years but you’ve just never found the time to maintain them. Maybe you didn’t notice them, maybe you didn’t have the correct equipment, or maybe you just didn’t know what to do with them!

We’re here to give you some brilliant tips on pruning in your garden this November, making sure that it stays in the condition it deserves.

What is pruning?

Pruning is the removal of particular parts of plants that are no longer of any use. There are several reasons why these parts are no longer beneficial. Some are functional, improving  the overall health of the plant. Whilst others are aesthetic, enhancing the overall appearance of the plant. Both significant reasons for keeping on top of your pruning duties. If done well, it creates a much healthier specimen, which is a lot more pleasing on the eye, leading to much greater improvement of the shape and growth of the plant.

Why prune?

Functional reasons to prune include:

  • Preventing the spread of disease by removing damaged or dead branches, so that it cannot spread further through the wood and plant
  • Improving air circulation and allowing light to reach the inner of the plant and in places where lower leaves may be situated
  • Improving the number of shoots produced by plants, therefore increasing yield
  • To control and direct any new growth
  • To compensate for any root loss during transplanting
  • Improving the overall health of the plant to increase longevity

Aesthetic reasons to prune include:

  • To expose any hidden colorful stems or bark
  • To create focal points to attract more attention
  • To create more space for further plants
  • To give shape and structure to each plant

When to prune?

Pruning can be a task for any time of year, however November is a particularly good month for this to take place. Why? Because after the Autumn leaf drop, you’re able to see the tree’s specific structure, enabling you to identify the disease and inspect any problems with greater ease.
