If you are considering upgrading from a standard lawnmower to a riding mower, then it is vital that you choose the right type for both you and your lawn.
There are many benefits to be had when upgrading to a lawn tractor, from ease of use, accommodations and attachments.
Lawn tractors are ideal for those with health problems, or those who struggle to stand and push mowers for long periods of time. With a ride on mower having a standardised key start, it eliminates the struggle of a pull start which is excellent for those who don’t have a great deal of upper body strength. Using a lawn tractor is very similar to driving a car, sitting down and using pedal drive.
So how do you choose the right lawn tractor for you and your lawn?
Well firstly, lawn size is one of the most important factors when it comes to choosing your tractor. To determine the appropriate working width for your lawn, use the chart below.
If you have a very large lawn, or very uneven sloping ground then choose a machine with wider wheels and a powerful engine.
Collection, Discharge and Mulching
You then need to work out what you want your tractor to do!
In order to achieve a professional, perfect cut, the grass clippings can be bagged and composted separately with a collection method.
The clippings could even be discharged with the aid of a deflector. This method is usually recommended when collection is not an option.
Or, you could mulch your clippings. Mulching has the advantage that the soil is fertilised with the grass clippings. The grass clippings have so many nutrients that they can act as a natural fertiliser for your soil. Mulching is recommendable in the dry summer months to prevent the lawn from drying out. Many tractors can be equipped with an additional mulch kit.
Transmissions
Transmatic Transmission – This allows for continuously variable shifting. You choose your basic speed by moving the speed shift lever and start mowing. When pressing on the brake pedal you will slow down your speed and start again without having to change gears. On release of the brake pedal, the tractor will automatically resume your pre-set speed.
Hydrostatic Transmission – This allows for smooth and precise manoeuvring. You are able to control velocity as well as the infinitely variable forward and reverse speed by the tilt food pedal. This means you can leave both hands on the steering wheel and there is no need to operate clutch or shift gear.
