It’s not an unknown fact that this has been the wettest winter in the UK since national records began in 1910.

Moss can appear for a number of reasons, however it most commonly forms when a lawn is poorly drained and left particularly moist. Moss is 90% water and therefore thrives in moist conditions which is why it’s incredibly important to keep on top of your gardening duties to suppress any build up of moss before it becomes a burden.

Due to having such a wet winter, your gardens are in danger of developing strong outbursts of moss for the upcoming spring/summer season.

Other reasons why moss could appear:

  • The ground could be too compact meaning that grass has difficulty to grow, allowing moss to take over.
  • There could be too much thatch on your lawn which is encouraging the growth of moss. Thatch is a layer of plant material that lays below the grass and stores a lot of moisture.
  • If your grass is too short then moss can overtake it. Grass needs to photosynthesise in order to grow and flourish and if it is too short then it cannot do this.
  • Moss will thrive if your garden is covered by a lot of shade. Trim bushes and trees to allow more sunlight to hit your lawn.
  • If a lawn is unhealthy and poorly fed then it cannot compete against moss. Feed the lawn with good fertilizers as and when needed to allow it to compete better against the moss.

In April last year we wrote a blog post featuring a 6 point lawn care plan for you to follow, in order to tackle moss in your garden. To view this lawn care plan click here. It provides you with all the vital information you need in order to re-vitalise your lawn, keep it healthy, and allow it to overtake moss at all times. Now is the time to start following this plan, so that it is healthy and moss-free for the summer.

This year we are focusing even more on the Micronised Lawn Sand Moss Control and Fertilizer, as we truly believe it is an exceptional product to be used in the moist conditions that are currently present.

Micronised Lawn Sand Moss Control and Fertilizer is absolutely fantastic to use on turfed areas. It is a traditional dry lawn sand formulation fertilizer that encourages grass growth to infill any bare areas left after moss control. It also has an acidifying effect which helps to deter any earthworm activity. Due to it being a dual action fertilizer and moss control product, it provides rapid treatment to the grass making it much more green in short amounts of time. Micronised Lawn Sand Moss Control and Fertilizer has an ingredient in it called ‘Ferrous Sulphate’ which helps to harden turf against any future turf disease such as Fusarium Patch.

This lawn sand and fertiliser is recommended to be used between the months of March – October.
