So here goes…

January/February
If the weather is mild, occassionally cut the grass, keeping about 25mm of growth. Try not to walk on or let children/pets play on frozen or waterlogged grass.

March
Make sure you rake the grass thoroughly using a spike aerator if you can. Do this all over and apply lawn sand if necessary. When mowing the grass keep your cutting height setting at high and just ‘top’ the grass.

April
If you have bare patches then re-seed them, applying fertilisers and towards the end of April apply moss killer to the lawn. Mow often, lowering the cutting heights on your mower gradually.

May
If you haven’t fed or treated the lawn with selective weedkillers in April, then it is highly advisable that you do so in May. Treat with a combined weed/feed preparation.

June
Now is the time to mow the lawn twice a week (if you have time!), if possible working to a definite pattern. If the weather has been dry it may be necessary to water the grass, remembering to soak thoroughly.

July
Treat grass with a second application of fertiliser and water in as necessary. Remember to not cut the grass too closely. When mowing, the key to success is ‘little and often’ – ie not too closely. This encourages extra shoots and stunts weeds and coarse grasses.

August
Keep on mowing regularly and watering if necessary. If there are any cracks caused by dry weather then fill in with a mixture of sharp sand and soil.

September
It’s time to raise the mower blades again. This will allow the grass to thicken and protect the roots from winter frost and snow. Also, it would be a good idea now to apply autumn-winter fertiliser, weed killer and moss killer

October
Rake out any thatch from the turf and use a spike lawn aerator on the turf to assist drainage. You can now brush in soil and sharp sand if you want and continue cutting as necessary – remember to not cut too short.

November/December
If you have worm casts on the lawn, use a stiff broom to remove them. If your grass is wet then please dont mow it as this will compact the soil and encourage waterlogging.

Hope this article has been helpful and will make planning your annual gardening duties easier

Justlawnmowers Say

“It’s not an easy task keeping your lawn in pristine condition.
